Historical Memphis
Memphis may be a city that many people simply pass through on their way to other destinations, but for over six hundred thousand people, it is home. Many famous musicians hail from Memphis, including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King and many others who made it in the music world.
Memphis is also the place where civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. In 1968, on April 4th, one day after giving his “I’ve been to the Mountaintop / I have a dream” speech, he was shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

The city of Memphis is a culturally diverse city with the population being a mix of white, African Amerian, Native American, Asian, Native Hawaiians, and Hispanics creating a colorful population. Other notable churches or religious venues include the Christ United Methodist Church, Calvary Episcopal Church, two cathedrals, over 10,000 muslims, and two of the largest synagogues in America, the Temple Israel which is a Reform synagogue and the Baron Hirsch Synagogue which is the largest Orthodox shul in the United States.
